A Basic History of the San Antonio Spurs Basketball Team

The San Antonio Spurs are a professional basketball team that plays in the National Basketball Association.

The San Antonio Spurs currently play in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference in the NBA. They play their home games at the AT&T Center.

The team is currently owned by Peter Holt and coached by Gregg Popovich. The official colors of the San Antonio Spurs are black, silver and white.

The franchise was founded in 1967 as the Dallas Chaparrals. The team was known as the Dallas Chaparrals until 1973, except from 1970-1971 when the team changed its name to the Texas Chaparrals. In 1973, the team moved to San Antonio and became known as the San Antonio Spurs.

During the time the team was known as the Dallas and Texas Chaparrals, the team played its home games at the State Fair Coliseum, the Moody Coliseum, the Tarrant County Coliseum and the Lubbock Memorial Coliseum. After the team moved to San Antonio, the Spurs have played their home games in the HemisFair Arena from 1973-1993, the Alamodome from 1993-2002, and currently the AT&T Center since 2002, which has also been known as the SBC Center.

The team has won a total of fifteen division titles in 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. The San Antonio Spurs have won three conference titles in 1999, 2003 and 2005. The team also won the NBA Championship all three years that they won the Conference Championship.

The Spurs have had three former players enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. George Gervin was enshrined in 1996. Moses Malone was enshrined in 2001, and Dominique Wilkins was enshrined in 2006.

The San Antonio Spurs have five retired numbers: 00 for Johnny Moore, 13 for James Silas, 32 for Sean Elliott, 44 for George Gervin, and 50 for David Robinson.

The team is currently headed by a group of three star players, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli. All three of these players are from outside the United States. Tim Duncan is from the Virgin Islands, although he did play college basketball at Wake Forest. Manu Ginobli is from Argentinia, and Tony Parker is from France.

Other notable players who have played for the Spurs include Avery Johnson, the current coach of the Dallas Mavericks, Dennis Rodman, Nick Van Exel, Steve Kerr, and Stephen Jackson, a current star player for the Golden State Warriors.
