A Beautician's Blessing

Hair Ye, Hair Ye!

Lee Hansen
When I was a little girl I would occasionally get the opportunity to go to the local beautician. But being from a large family, consisting largely of sisters, the price was not always affordable. If it came to feeding our family or having a newly pressed hairstyle, the priority was feeding us. And rightfully so. But I always had dreams that when I was older and working I would make this a reality.

As an adult many years later I have been able to treat myself to this weekly indulgence. After a long day of work it is a treat to be pampered and talk with other patrons. Now as a retiree I still enjoy this luxury while living on a monthly pension. Admittedly it can sometimes be more of a challenge when living on a limited budget.

But sometimes those unexpected or quarterly expenses come your way that make you have to rethink your priorities. Such was the case that I found myself in. Fortunately I was able to pay those bills. However, it did make me think of my luxury item of the weekly visit to my beautician. Would I have to omit that on such a regular basis?

Yesterday while at my scheduled hair appointment my beautician and I were having a casual conversation. I nonchalantly mentioned that I almost didn't make it because of the aforementioned expenses. Several minutes elapsed in comfortable silence as she busily styled my hair.

While she was finishing up she said, "Lee, you have been so faithful. Let me bless you by giving you a senior discount from now on". (It was actually more). I couldn't believe my ears. I asked, "Are you sure"? She said, "Yes". She further stated that other businesses do it. She said she wanted to bless me because I had been a blessing to her for15 years of being her steady customer. I got up from the chair and gave her a big hug of appreciation.

I can now continue to enjoy this luxury because she chose to bless me. And I intend to do just that. This story serves as a reminder that you never know when you will receive a blessing.

Never take them for granted. And while you're at it, be a blessing to someone today. I sure intend to be. How can I not?

I have naturally straight baby fine hair and perms never take with me. I do go and get it cut once in awhile. It is a treat.

Customer loyalty is a valuable asset in business. Your beautician knows how hard making your own living is. With her offer of perpetual discount, you both win.
