A Beautifully Decorated Hallway

A hallway can be just as great to decorate as any other room if you are willing to dedicate the time and effort to do it. It can take on the theme and colors of a particular room, such as the living room, or it can even have its own theme and colors if done correctly. Items you should think about including in the décor of the hallway are a long rectangle rug, pictures, fixtures, candles, shelves, figurines, or a clock.

Your first step is to decide whether your going to decorate around an item or have a theme instead. If you do have a theme keep it simple, limit it to the rug, a few wall fixtures, and possibly the border. If you don't have a theme to work with then you need to build your décor around a certain item , such as a picture or the rug.

Once you decide what to build your décor around the next step is to choose your colors. One or two colors are sufficient due to the small size of the hallway. If you do have two colors then they should both be present in one item, the item you have chosen to build your décor around. If the rug is a solid color then that color should also be implemented on the wall in some way. For instance, lets say that you have chosen a painting of a tree surrounded by lovely pink and purple flowers to build your décor around. You have chosen pick and purple as your color scheme and intend to put a rug down and candles on each side of the painting. If your rug is pink you will either want to put a pink candle and a purple candle on both sides of the painting, for a total of four candles. Putting just purple candles up would look odd so if you only wanted two candles you would need to buy a purple rug or change your color scheme to pink and use pink candles.

Although you can keep your hallway's theme or color separate from the theme or color in your other rooms it should never draw attention to itself. People should notice your hallway while passing through it but if they are standing in another room the hallway should not grab their attention. If it does then it is time to tone down the décor. Here are a few simple guidelines to keep your hallway looking its best without becoming an attention grabber.

- First the walls should be kept the same color as the main room leading to it, usually the living room. If your living room walls are white don't paint your hallway walls red.
- Also if your main room has border or wallpaper then your hallway should have either matching border or wallpaper or nothing at all. If your living room has flowered border don't put striped border in your hallway.
- Don't use more than two colors and only use a mixture of colors in one item unless you have a theme and all the items match perfectly and are from the same print. If you have the previously mentioned painting up then don' have a flowered rug unless it has the exact same flowers as the painting.
- If you have wallpaper in your hallway that are not a solid color you should not have any other items with designs in there as well, it will be too much. However if you only have border then it is alright to have other items, such as a rug, in the hallway that has the same exact print on it.
- If in doubt your best bet is to have one item that contains multiple colors and have all other items be a solid color.

Keep these points in mind and you will have a beautifully decorated hallway before you know it.
