A Beginner's Guide to Knitting a Scarf
It's Time to Unwind, Relax, and Discover That Trendy Lady (or Man) Inside of You
Step 1: Find an ad in Michaels for 50% off one item. Check out Michaels.com. If you want to start today, skip this step and dig into your pocket book. Even without a coupon you can start your hobby and create your first scarf for under $20.
Step 2. Craft shop. We suggest Michaels or Joanne's for the first time. Small, cute yarn shops tend to be more expensive. While at Michael's purchase size 19, 36 or 50 needles. The smaller needles take longer and you'll feel success more quickly with larger needles. Purchase any two or three types of yarn, the more simplistic the better.
Step 3: lay the balls of yarn on the ground, and hold one needle in your right hand. Pick up two strands of yarn, and hold them together. Pretend these two strands are one strand. In fact, from now on, these two strands have become one. If you prefer, you can use one strand, but we like the added texture, color, quickness and thickness created from using two or three balls of yarn.
Step 4: create a slipknot, and place it midway over one of the needles. Pull snuggly but not too snug.
Step 5. Create 3-5 more slipknots around the needle. Don't pull too tightly.
Step 6. If you're right handed, place the needle with the slipknots in your left hand. Push all the knots to the right side. Take the other needle and insert it from bottom to top under the highest stitch. The needle should be right in front of the knot.
Step 7. The needles should be crossed. Take the string, and loop it counter-clockwise around the bottom needle, back again to the right side.
Step 8. Take the bottom needle, and arch it DOWNWARDS, into the hole, closest to the other needle. Use the bottom needle to pull the string off the other needle (the needle with the slip knots)
Step 9. now that you have pulled off the slipknot you should have your first stitch on the other needle!! Repeat.
Step 10: when you finish the row of slipknots, place the needle back in your left hand. Repeat the process again.
Step 11: repeat the full length of the scarf.
Step 12: when you are finished, knit two stitches. Pull the bottom stitch over the top stitch until it falls off. Knit one stitch. Pull the bottom over the top. Repeat until there is one loop left. Tie it into a knot and tada! You have created your first scarf!
