A Beginners Guide to Sail Boating

Jim Posey
There are not many activates that can provide the state of mind that accompanies sail boating. Out on the open far away from the worries of the city you can have and peace.

There are many different types of sailboat available to choose from. When you pick a sailboat don't automatically assume that you should buy the most expensive one that you see. You have to take into account the type of boating that you will be doing and pick a boat to match

Small Sailboats

These are tinier sailboats made of fiberglass, they will usually have wood or aluminum spars. Most of the time small sailboats will have two sails; a mini sail with a jib. Small sailboats are great for racing because they tend to be light weight.

Daysailors

Daysailors are the perfect lounge boat. These vessels are slow and steady. One characteristic of daysailers is that they tend to wider than other sail boats and thus allow for a lot more to engage in social activities or whatever!

Cruising Sailboats

Much like Daysailers, these boats are considerably wider than small sailboats. However, Cruising sailboats are longer, some twenty feet longer most of the time. The boats are great for pleasure sailing and make for one comfortable ride.

Though you should attend boating school before you take your vessel out on the water, here are is a beginner guide to sail boating that will give you an idea of what to expect when your out on the water. These are five essentials that every beginner sail boater should know. Luckily they are helpfully kept in order via a mnemonic device, "can this boat sail correctly".

C

Course made good. Using the wheel or tiller the boat will go in the direction desired. This will take practice and patience to get down.

T

Trim. Trim is adjusting for and aft balance by using moveable ballast.

B

Balance

Port and starboard balance. Change the weight windward or leeward to keep the boat from leaning too far in any direction.

C

Centerboard

Allows for the boat to move upwind and will prevent side to side motion.

In short, the beginners guide to sailing is to being able to know the way the wind is blowing and adjusting the craft accordingly. Remember that you have to control the ship don't let the wind control it. This will send you in the wrong direction.
