A Beginner's Guide to Snowboarding

Alex Smith
Some people have always dreamed of trying a new sport, such as snowboarding, but never gather the guts to actually get up and do it. The funny thing is snowboarding isn't actually as difficult as some imagine it to be. So, if you have been longing to get on a snowboard and try it out for yourself... just do it - you'll enjoy it! Trust me.

When I was younger, I always imagined snowboarding to be a very difficult sport. But the moment I got on the slopes, I pretty much proved myself wrong. However, it wasn't easy, either. I personally recommend you to get snowboarding lessons before hitting the slopes, most of all if you have absolutely no idea how it works.

Booking snowboarding lessons isn't all that difficult. Just speak with your local snowboarding slope and they will easily set you up with a snowboarding instructor in your general area that will be glad to help you out. After all, that's their job. Snowboarding lessons may cost up to $35 an hour, but if you take snowboarding lessons as a group, you can get a cheaper rate.

My very first lesson was conducted by a friend. However, I strongly recommend that you get lessons from a profession ski instructor, in order to be really safe. Snowboarding instructors are a safe bet because you know that they have been snowboarding for a long time and are seasoned professionals at it. Plus, they also have a better idea of how to communicate to those they are teaching.

Common questions that snowboarding beginners ask usually pertain to what they need to buy before hitting the slopes. The answer is: you probably don't have to buy a single thing if you have the proper gear already sitting in your wardrobe. If you are a true blue beginner, it would be a great idea to just rent the gear you need from your local snowboarding slope. There are quite a number of places that even rent snowboarding gear free of charge, if you already have to pay a fee to use the slope. The reason you should not buy your own snowboarding gear from the off is because you may not enjoy it as much as other people do. And if you don't, you don't want to get stuck with a bunch of snowboarding gear you will probably never use again. So stay on the safe side.

Proper clothing is another necessity when it comes to snowboarding, even if it is just your first time. Keep it basic, though. Just wear gloves (if you have waterproof ones, that's great, but it's not a necessity) and a decent amount of clothing layers. Actually, anything that is waterproof is great to wear during snowboarding lessons, as it will give you a great advantage over the other snowboarders. Also keep in mind that no matter how thick you think your clothes are, they will get cold once you get wet in the snow. So, wear warm clothes, unless you don't mind feeling like a popsicle up on the slopes.

Despite the cold weather, being on the slopes will make the sun shine into your eyes, whether you like it or not, as it reflects off the snow. To avoid going blind, make sure you wear appropriate sunglasses with UV protection to shield your peepers from the sun.

Once you're properly clothed and have a snowboarding instructor at hand, you're pretty much ready to go. Get out there, learn to snowboard and enjoy yourself!
