A Birth Story

Have No Fear, Modern Medicine is Amazing!

M. Roberts
I was a first time mom and as any first time expectant mother I was nervous about what to anticipate during delivery. All I can say is that my delivery was a much more enjoyable experience than my pregnancy. I am a short active woman but while I was pregnant I gained 55 pounds. I could barely move, my feet had to be elevated most of the last 2 months. I was still pregnant at 41 weeks and so my doctors finally had to induce me. I had heard horror story after horror story about being induced. Here is the story of my delivery.

After the doctor broke my water they started me on pitocin, this helps to move your body along faster. They tried to get an anastesioligist in to see me right away but they got caught up for a few minuets. By the time the anastesioligist got to me I had to begun to vomit from the contractions. I got nervous thinking it was only going to get worse from here. However the anastesioligist did a great job in between my heaves and within a few my epidural was working and all the pain had vanished. I laid and waited until I was dilated to a ten. It took almost 3 hours. When the nurse checked to see if I was ready she was pleasantly surprised. She opted to have me practice pushing before she called the doctor to see how I would progress. After two pushes she called the Doctor.

Less than half an hour later the doctor was in my room. I pushed once to let him see how I was doing. He told me that our baby was going to be big and it would be necessary to have an episiotomy. After I had my episiotomy I pushed only one more time and our baby girl was born. She was 8 pounds 10 ounces and 22 inches long. She was a big baby which made me feel a little better about all the weight I had gained.

I truly feel like my baby girls birth was such a blessing. It was a wonderful experience and I would do it again in a heart beat the problem for me is getting through the nine months!
