A Bit Out of the Ordinary Spring Break Destinations

Shirley Norling
Students look forward to spring breaks for months before they actually go. Many hot spots for spring break include any place that is warm, has a beach and promises to be lots of fun. I have found some places that could be considered unusual for spring break, but that have things to offer that are fun and exciting and aren't the same old beach areas where everyone else hangs out. Here are 5 spring break destinations that are a little bit out of the ordinary, but have a lot of interesting things to do for the vacationer.

1. Savannah Music Festival-3/24 to 4/9: My brother attended this musical festival with his friends a few years back and they considered it one of the best spring breaks ever. It's 18 days of musical events combining concerts, education, film and lectures. This world class heritage celebration has adventurous productions that stimulate the arts and unite artists and audiences at the largest festival in Georgia. In just a day or two, you will experience classical, jazz and world music and gain insight into how these different traditions intertwine. Savannah, Georgia may not be considered a hot spring break destination, but the fun you can have and knowledge you can gain in this historic area will be well worth the trip. For more info., check out Savannah Music Festival.com.

2. South Bay Southwest Festival: You'll want to head to Austin, Texas, for the 25th anniversary of the most anticipated convergence of all things music if you think this would be an interesting spring break option. A highlight on opening day of this Southwest music festival is Crystal Bowersox, the runner up on season 9 of that infamous American Idol television show. During this 10 day celebration visitors can enjoy keynote speakers, over 400 bands and multiple films. Stand-up comedy is also a big part of this Austin event held during the midst of the spring break season. I have been to this area several times as I have family living their, and I always enjoy the hospitality of the Texas folks. If you want more info. on this SXSW festival, you may want to subscribe to their newsletter at sxsw.com.

3. California Bike Tours: How about a bike tour to enjoy the great outdoors and the warmth of California on your spring break. One may consider this to be an unusual spring break destination, but these 3 to 7 day tours promise to be not on the boring side to say the least. One tour that caught my eye for the spring break bikers was 6 days and 5 nights and included the whole 250 mile region from San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara, Ca. It includes 6 days of great bike riding, great restaurants, and inviting inns all wrapped up in one neat little package. The California Road Bike Tour Co. at 877-322-1667 or undiscovered country bike tours.com is where you can obtain more information.

4. Florida's Big Bend: A Florida spring break vacation with warmth, sunshine and beaches with a hint at wildlife and natural areas is what this area has to offer the spring breakers. Guests can enjoy snorkeling, golf, swimming, canoeing and lots more in this area with the nickname Native Coast. For the race fan, the Bronson Speedway is also in this area. Several tours are available to explore this area and lots of accommodation, dining, and night life options are all here in Florida's Big Bend for those who might like a bit different Florida spring break vacation.

5. Chicago: For those who would like to explore the Midwest during their spring break, Chicago is the place to go. No beaches here, and sometimes it's a bit windy, thus the nickname "Windy City", but for anyone who may enjoy interesting sites to see, Chicago may just be the place to head for. You will find plenty to do in Chicago whether it's touring museums, visiting historic sites or attending a concert, Chicago has it all. There are several packages available that include accommodations, touring, sightseeing and entertainment in the Chicago area.

Other then having visited many of these areas myself, I found a lot of information on these destinations at a great website, the worldweb.com. It contained a lot of information on destinations all over the US, and Internationally as well, so if you're undecided about a spring break destination, I suggest checking this one out.
