A Bitter Cup to Drink From

Darren Stansbury
Today came a notice of a lay off pending

'Cause the cost of doing business is less overseas.

My dreams are on hold or my dreams are now ending

And comes day to day living of late bills and late fees

And searching for work in a market so sour,

And collectors calling, writing with no letting up.

The only jobs I find pay seven an hour.

I thirst for better than this bitter drink in my cup.

It's a bitter cup to drink from when you're unemployed.

I'm as invisible as anyone can be.

People I see don't speak to me, but they sure can stare.

I'm surrounded by folks who don't care about me,

Who care so little they won't even pretend to care.

It's a bitter cup to drink from when nobody cares.

I look back on my life and see where I went wrong.

I settled for comfort, didn't dare to take a dare.

I strive to make it right, to sing a joyful song.

So, now I manage my life, and manage it with care.

I've wandered close to fire, and I did get burned.

The stings from my past mistakes will in time diminish.

Reality bit me, but I've grown and I've learned.

I'm building me a better life from start to finish.

I've tossed away the bitter cup and I'm reaching for a better cup.
