A Bizarre Family Hike!

Annie Dreyer

Would you like to know one of my favorite trips of all time? Our family trip to Hawaii! When I first heard we were going to Honolulu, I was very excited for a beach-filled, surfing, fantastic food trip. Soon, we packed our bags and were off to the airport.

We landed and were off to the famous pink hotel, the Royal Hawaiian on Waikiki Beach. For the first few days, we spent our time lounging on the beach, having fantastic Hawaiian feasts and wandering around the streets on Honolulu. Many days at the beach we had a great little sub and smoothie shop, along with shaved ice down the beach. My family, fun and adventurous as they are, wanted to invest in some surf boards. I learned to surf for the first time, and was terribly excited.

A few days went by, a few more, and soon the end of our vacation was coming. What had we done for the past seven days? Surfed, went to a luau, shopping, went snorkeling, went on a crazy canoe ride and drove up the coast. However, we were still thirsty for adventure. So, we took our small purple car (we did not get to chose our car) and asked the locals for some cool hiking places.

So, we ended up going on a hike that sounded "easy" and there was a waterfall at the end! I also looked up what the rating of difficulty was for the hike "easy enough for a young child, fun waterfall at the end!" We soon took off for the hike. Oh, and we also took some hotel towels after the waterfall. My dad and sister forgot their tennis shoes at home, and the rest of us remembered our tennis shoes...

We got there, and there was total cloud cover, a little chilly, too. I tried to wear my flip-flops instead, and I ended up wearing my tennis shoes. We trotted off down the path, and we soon found some other tourists covered in mud and sweating, with soggy shoes.

"Oh, the waterfall was a lot of fun, but the hike is pretty hard," said a mother walking with two little boys. Oh, I thought, she just thought it was hard because of her boys. We kept on walking for an hour or so, and we started to become slightly restless and ready for the waterfall. Again, we saw a family, but this time they were teenagers, not little boys, and they said that the hike there was hard! Well, it was too hard to back out... so we kept on walking.

Soon we had to crawl over a branch and my dad's shoe snapped! It was caught on a branch and he didn't know. After the minor shoe setback, it started pouring. Soon we encountered several steep inclines with extremely slippery mud, which equals many slips down a hill, and having to start back up the mud. My dad's toe began to get infected, which I guess wasn't very fun!

We eventually got to the water fall, and that was pretty fun! We jumped in from the rocks, swung on the rope swing, and crawled over rocks and branches. It started to rain again, so we stayed a little bit longer hoping that it would pass before we would start down hiking. So, we stayed a little bit longer... but the rain never passed. My family started to go back up the hill, but slipped down a few times. My sister's shoe broke off, and both my dad and sister only had one shoe.

Well, since it had rained pretty hard we couldn't see that well, and couldn't tell from the path to the end of the path. The five of us ended up getting lost, and we were out in the middle of the rainforest huddled under a small tree with a river on one side and a big hill on the other. My dad and sister only had one shoe, and we only had our wet hotel towels from the car.

We eventually started to see people, and thank goodness, because we were very lost! On the way back we were in the prehistoric land of dinosaurs, trying to get back to our house! Well, we eventually did and it was a very entertaining hike! The while hike lasted about seven hours, and I learned something: always listen to the woman with the little boys!

That is one of my favorite trips ever, our summer trip the Honolulu, Hawaii!
