A Bliss Kit: What is it and How to Put One Together

John Vann
The first question you are probably asking is, "what exactly is a bliss kit?" Well, the term originated amongst the Rainbow Family of Living Light, a community of nature lovers and peace advocates who gather on a yearly basis. A bliss kit is simply several different tools that you carry with you at all times. But For the Rainbow Family, the most important tools are a plate or bowl, a spoon or a fork and a water container. When you are living for weeks at a time, in the middle of the forest with thousands of other people, you tend to get quite hungry. And since you never quite know when a good meal is going to pop out, you need to have your eating utensils at the ready.

Of course, the bliss kit can be adapted for any situation, activity or setting. It is ideal for camping, hiking, hunting, kayaking, or any number of other outdoor activities. Music festivals, because of their communal atmosphere and setting are also great places to carry around a bliss kit.

A bowl is better to have than a plate - you can eat a steak out of a bowl, but it is nearly impossible to eat soup from a plate. And a spoon is generally better to have than a fork, though both work well. You may even want to consider a spork. There are some quality models available that have been specifically designed with camping and outdoor use in mind.

Having a quality container to store clean water, or some other beverage is a good idea, too. In the wild, clean drinking water can be hard to come by, and you'll want to be able to collect as much of it as possible whenever you can.

The items of your bliss kit are usually kept together by a carabineer, which can be placed on belt loop or a backpack for quick access. And in no way is your bliss kit limited to only a bowl, a spoon and a water container - you can add anything that you think you'll need to your bliss kit. Flashlights, pocket knives and MP3 players are just a few examples of some of the things you may want to add.

In order to properly understand the importance of a bliss kit, you really need to live off from the land for a couple of weeks in the wilderness. Campers do it all the time, though most family camping or hiking trips only last for a day or two at the most.
