A Boy Can Dream!

Johnny Yuma
A boy can dream--can't he? All my childhood it seemed was spent working day in and day out from sun up until sun down doing one thing or another on that farm where I grew up. I thought everyday of running away but had no place to run too. I dreamed of growing up, so that I could leave the farm. Finally it happened; I got away from that farm. I first worked in Little Rock, Arkansas--Next I spent time in Alabama, Mississippi and back in Texarkana, Arkansas before moving on to Kansas City Missouri. A boy can dream, and I still dreamed of finding that certain someone--that special girl that was meant for me. I knew there had to be someone somewhere that was meant just for me I hoped that someday I would meet her whoever she was and wherever she lived

I don't remember how many years it had been, but I was back on the farm visiting my parents for a while when a friend came by. He wanted me to go with him to see his girlfriend. She had a sister, and he wanted me to take her out. I did take her out a few times but had no real feelings for her. Then one Friday or Saturday night, we went to pick the girls up, and the one I had been dating said she was sick and couldn't go. I have always wondered if really was sick or only used that as an excuse to get away from me. It doesn't really matter, as I was glad to not have to come up with a reason that I couldn't see her anymore. I already had been searching for one but didn't want to come out and lie in order to get rid of her. My friends date showed me two pictures and said that she probably could get either one of those two girl to go with me for that one night. I picked the picture that I liked best, and we went to her house. Norma went in and talked to her, and in a little while both girls came out. Norma introduced me to Carolyn, and we left. Carolyn and I talked and got to know one another better. Over the next few days I thought about the girl I had just met often.
A boy can dream, and I did.

I knew that girl was too young to get serious about, but I also knew she was very grown up for her age. I couldn't help but wonder if she was that certain someone. Maybe I just had to wait a few more years until she finished high school and any other education that she chose. Soon I knew that I was in love, but I couldn't convince her that we were meant for one another. We would date a few times then she would call it off and begin seeing someone else. Finally, we broke up to see each other no more.

I began dating someone that I had known for years. We even got engaged, but I knew I didn't love her like I did that young lady that I had hoed to make my own. Something happened--I don't remember what, that caused us to break up. What a Relief! As soon as I got engaged, I knew it was a mistake--that I never should have gotten involved with that girl. There was no way the two of us would ever be happy together. Plus, I still thought a lot about that young lady named Carolyn. A boy can dream, and I felt as if I had found the girl of my dreams. Eventually, after a rocky romance she made my dreams come true and still does even after 38 years of marriage.

A boy can dream, and sometimes he gets lucky and his dreams come true.

We finally got married and have been now for 38+ years. We have three kids and seven grandkids all because of that one night when the other girl told me she was sick.
