A Boy Named Bill

Mudslinger
A ten year old boy that I will call Bill showed up for my Sunday School class about a year ago. I have never seen as much anger and hate in my life as I saw in the face of Bill. But when I looked closer I also saw fear. What this young man was or had gone through, I didn't know. But I was going to try and find out. Bill was in class every Sunday morning and Wednesday night. He always sat in the back and never had anything to say. If I ask him a question he would just stare at me.

I always have an outing for the class each month. Bill never came to these outing, that is until I told the class we were going fishing. After class Bill was just hanging around. This was something new for him. When I ask him if there was something he needed, he just said that it might be interesting to go fishing. Then he told me that he had never been fishing. I ask him if his dad would like to join us, he just stated he didn't have a dad plus he didn't have a way to get to the lake. Well I gave him a ride and when he caught a fish he really smiled for the first time.

After that I would pick Ben up before church and take him home after. Sometimes we would have lunch at the local cafe. During the next six months I learned about Bill. His dad was dead and his mother was in prison and didn't want anything to do with him. Bill was living in a foster home. We talk on the phone and at church and the anger finally went away. I really saw what a great person Bill really was. When we talked I would tell him about God and Jesus. He started taking in every word in Sunday School class. We both cried the day Bill gave his heart to Jesus. I wish that I could say that from that moment on Bill's life was a bed of roses but I can't. Three weeks to the day Bill's foster Dad was high on Meth and killed everyone in the family including Bill.

There are so many children in this world that live in pain and hurt. I know that I share my love for God with every child that I meet and talk to. My problem is that so many people don't even have time to teach their own children about Jesus and his love. These same people will set in church put on a big show but they won't take the time to teach their children.

Children are the future and without a little knowledge, what kind of future will it be. I pray that these children have been taught about the love and protection that Jesus can give them. I pray that at least some of the adults in this world will take the time to teach a child about God. I know that I will never stop teaching the love of Jesus Christ.

Poignant, hard hitting, and well written.
