A Bridge of a Single Step

Penny White
It doesn't take a bridge a mile long
to span the gap on the cavern of despair;
a bridge of a single step is enough to repair
a damaged heart, or a broken soul;
a breach of trust can again be restored
and faith once again renewed.

A bridge of a single step
is enough to span the chasm
of loneliness, no matter its depth
or width or breadth;
it is enough to strengthen resolve and hope,
enough so that the building
of other bridges
becomes a joyous task,
an undertaking anticipated
with wonder and awe
at the prospect of discovery.

It is enough.
And in being enough,
it becomes more
than just a bridge
of a single step.
