A Bridge Too Far - Local Beauty Queen Loses Crown

When is Miss Cornwall Not Miss Cornwall?

The judges in the Miss Cornwall contest which was held recently in Newlyn, were impressed by the charm and beauty of Laura Anness, and unanimously crowned her Miss Cornwall.

This was her fourth attempt to win this content, and the problem is that not only did she lie about her age, she isn't even from Cornwall.

Laura Anness, who is actually 27, is a teacher who comes from Plymouth, which is in Devon. Across the other side of the River Tamar is the town of Saltash, which is in Cornwall, and where Miss Anness said that she was from. But when it comes to counties, the Tamar Bridge in this case is a Bridge Too Far.

The discrepancies were only found out when one of the contest organisers, Becky Chapman, noticed that Laura had put her age as 22 on every entry form that she had submitted - dating back to 2006.

This triggered a red flag for Becky Chapman, who contacted Laura, who then admitted she had lied about her age.

Becky then had to visit Laura at her home, and that is how she found out where she lives, across the river, but in this case that's a whole new county!

And so Laura sadly had to give up her crown, which was awarded to the runner up, Samantha Orpe, who is 21, comes from Truro, and she will be crowned in a new ceremony.

Laura also had to give up her prize money of £2,000, and her entry into the Miss England competition.

The organiser, Becky Chapman said that she felt very sorry for Laura. She had been trying to win these contests for years, and now she finally did win, her title had to be taken away.

When questioned by the media, Laura, who works at Plymouth University, said that she just wanted to forget about it.

I've never understood beauty contests but if you can't play by the rules, don't enter!
