A Brief Father's Day History and Adorable Child's Father's Day Craft

Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Grandparent's Day are special opportunities for children to show their caregivers how much they are appreciated and loved.

Father's Day first began in Spokane, Washington. After hearing a sermon about Mother's Day, Sonora Smart Dodd decided that Fathers too should be included in a special day of recognition.

After Dodd's mother passed away, she was raised by her father. She wanted to let him know how much he had done for her. Her father's birthday was in June and she determined that this was the perfect month for Father's Day. On the 19th day of June in 1910, Dodd had the first Father's Day.

Although the first Father's Day was actually held years before, Father's Day was not made official until several years later. A committee was formed in 1926 and in 1956 Congress recognized the holiday. In 1972, President Nixon stepped in and made Father's Day the third Sunday of June each year.

There are many different ways to honor your father on Father's Day. The best gifts are not necessarily the ones that cost the most but the ones that take the most thought. Younger children can honor their fathers and show their love through pictures, drawings, and homemade crafts.

While most believe that mothers have a softer heart for these handmade gifts of love, fathers too have a big heart when it comes to tiny handprints and smiles.

The Father's Day craft below will win dad's heart over through candy and love. Try it! The kids will enjoy it and he will love it!

Materials:

Jar (plastic peanut butter, pint, etc)

One new pair of socks

One new pair of gloves

Hershey Hugs and Kisses candy

Directions:

Fill the jar with the Hershey's Hugs and Kisses. Use needle and thread to tack the socks together at the toes. Sew the open end of each glove to the open end of each sock. This should create the appearance of arms (the socks) and hands (the gloves). Wrap the arms and hands creation around the jar a few times until you think that they are the right length. Attach the following poem to the jar or create your own.

Daddy,

If all of these kisses just won't do,

There are gloves to help you too.

If all of the hugs just aren't sweet,

Try the socks to warm your feet.

If from this gift, the love you can't see,

Then you can have REAL hugs and kisses from me!
