A Butterfly in the Snow

Shirley A Mandel
Lovely Dorcas died.
She was like a butterfly
in the snow.

She was quite beautiful,
and she was quite dead,
for the frosty breath of winter
has cut her off
long before it's time
for the winter solstace
to cover the land in darkness.

Come Peter come.
Come and raise this lady
who has blessed others
with her charity
and her handmade gifts of clothing.

You can do it, Peter,
for you have the breath
of the Giver of Life
Himself,

Jesus.

And He is more like
the springtime sun
calling the butterflys forth
from their ashen tombs
than an early winter
snowy wind.

You can do it, Peter!

Do it now.
