A Byte Out of Time

Liam UiCearbhaill
Computers are a wonder
In this our modern age
We think of them as miracles
In this New World Brave

In bits and bytes the data flows
Upon the Internet
From deserts dry and mountains high
To places far more wet

For information various
We turn to CD ROM
And baseball fields like Candlestick
Are renamed for 3Com

We stare at screens and pound on keys
And debate modem specs
Our children and our grandparents
Debark on cybertreks

We celebrate the speed at which
The information flows
And count a seven minute wait
Inadequately slow

We want to know the answers Now
We want the problems Fixed
Patient perseverance does not
Belong in our ethics

We've gained a tap on knowledge
Like none was e'er before
We've lost the time to smell the rose
That grows beside our door
