You will need a good portfolio to show to prospective clients when they are considering hiring you for the job. You will need some experience taking shots but you do not need to go to school in order to do this. You can build a portfolio by going to Sears and Walmart and having their photographers take some professional looking pictures of you. This is what I did and it ran me just $10. You should then lag these out on thick pages as you would a scrap book to put together a book of content for presentation.
You should scan these images into your computer and email companies that are within the area that you would like to work in. If you have no problem wearing shoes on camera then email all the top catalogs and let them know that they are looking for work. You should attach the pictures that you have taken and include your information. This is what I did and I have gotten a few jobs this way.
Also, if you live near a modeling agency then you should walk in and ask to meet with someone at the agency. You should present yourself well and look nice, leave them with your book and let them know you are looking for work and they will book you for some gigs. Lastly, if you really want to get work then you should market your images to agents on Myspace and Craigslist so that they know you are they will give you work. This is what I have done in the past and I have booked work this way and you can also.
