A Cat in My Hat

Jessie Penn
Frost on the pumpkin patch, leaves on the porch,

The cat's eyes glowed as bright as a torch.

Thumps and bumps and visions of chains,

Barking dogs and howling winds, dark clouds overhead,

Kept me awake all night in my bed.

Halloween trickery and treaters were gone for the night,

But all of a sudden, what did I see, two big orange lights

and a shadowy outline, something of fright!

Slowly and surely, there were footsteps on my bed,

My mind filled with visions of ghosts and the night of the dead.

Then quickly the footsteps were replaced by a rumbling sound,

What is it, I gasped as my heart began to pound.

The footsteps started again, once more, closer this time,

A slight breeze drifted over my arm, as this thing came near!

But wait! What do I hear? Oh, yes, it's now clear,

I turned on the light, and laughed with a tear,

It's only my kitten, the sweet little dear!
