A Cave Called Me: Tribute to Nina Simone

"Oh Lord, Please Don't Let Me Be Understood." Nina Simone 1964

Arkay Evans
Ain't no light here on the dark side,
blue or red for all the day,
it feels no matter how I try,
life's no better,
and I don't die.
They said, 'She's no one, absolutly nothing'
then stole this low identity,
the FBI got a picture of me.
A demon came to leave me for dead.
Hit hard twice life busted my head.
It seems the world is ruined, changed,
and memories come to haunt me, taunt me,
bad won't leave the unwell be,
God sees fear that lives in me,
the feelings I don't want to breathe
I screamed today, and it scared me
to stand against the great machine.
Where, oh Lord, can this happiness be?
The ever-present help I need?
my pain seems small to another, Lord
but don't ignore the slight you see,
It's me. The one afraid to talk,
and not because there is no need.
Been willin' to pay the price to believe,
but trips to hell, one way, are free.
So, down, I'm slapped,
my gifts untapped, and
Trapped
in A Cave Called
me.

There is so much substance and emotion in this work - I am overwhelmed. You dig deep here, and most who read it will be not be willing to admit the reality of having feelings such as these. You moved me here, and THAT is great writing.
