A Chance it is a Question

Ed Robbins
A chance it is a question
If the world can be as one
When promises are broken
And nothing can be done

To trade another silence
And in the darkness cloak
The mysteries I ponder
Like another harmless joke

Where is life's conspiracy?
The telling tale of all?
Where's the tale of Man and Wife?
Of Eden 'for the fall

The Lord is punishing me with knives
Like glory in his coach
With iron bars, wicked cars
And thieves above reproach

Diamond stars will shine like peace
The ancients used to chart
Rubbing hands across the rocks
Creating works of art

Giving peace another chance
I write a pleasant song
I speak in tones of clarity
Of nights and journeys long

The thinking of a lover
The challenges of sight
The patience of a listener
The sliver trails of light

Combine these feelings
Let them go
Let the planet be
A changing orb
A mass of life
The vengeful man at sea

For what it is we seek to know
Not only what to hide
Not only what's within our grasp
Or thorns within our side

The lives of gems and diamonds past
Preserved in song and verse
The glory of our nation's march
The snatching of her purse

Leaves us wond'ring what can be
Can Iron stop its rust?
Can nation's rise up once again?
From ashes over dust?

The snout of Satan
Pigs his head
In matters that we know
Prima Nocte, Facilmente
A woman's painful birth

Never knowing what to say
We stand before the arch
Amidst the ancient oaken trees
Hands and fingers touch

A follower's burden breaks his back
His master's swollen pride
A d'yer maker, salted shaker
Schooner on the tack

At the speed of sound
A bloodless hound
He searches for a meal
A dying whale, harpoons for sale
The ocean waves of teal

Within these rhymes and verses chime
Our poet's angered tooth
It bristles bare a shining glare
When lies become the truth
