A Change in Direction

James Schlarmann
Some aspects of my life that have definitely changed over the years are my political and world views on just about every major subject. You see, I was a product of a very strict protestant (Baptist no less!) upbringing that drilled those beliefs into me. I would espouse them to everyone too. Oh I was a self-righteous ass.

In fact, I'd even pray out in the quad with the other super-Christian kids in my Freshman year. I carried a Bible to classes. Anyone who knows me now, and has only known me for the past 10 years would probably think I'm making some of this up as a joke.

But I swear to God, this is all true. Through events that were sometimes tragic, cataclysmic, or just normal "growing up" stuff, I started to change. I started to value freedom as being the most important commodity. And while the Religious Right has somehow usurped control over the word "freedom" in the post-9/11 world, I started to realize that in fact it was the liberals that were true defenders of freedom.

Well, not the Liberal Zealots. Zealots on either side of the aisle are totally gross. They turn me off to politics. In fact for about four years I avoided politicians and politics like the Plague on a stick. As I grow more confident in my own beliefs, I'm starting to tread back into those waters, armed with what I've learned over years of experience.

The point of all this is to say that I'm moving to the left hand side of the road, politically speaking. I just want everyone to get along. You don't have to agree, just don't call each other stupid names and troll each other. If actual civil discourse was being participated in by those in power, maybe more work could actually get done. Because human beings are more willing to try new things, things they may not even agree with, if they just get a little respect from the other side.

@James, I have to say if that is true about GE not paying taxes, this is a huge hit to Obama. I want Obama to succeed, but where are the jobs at? Now he gives jobs to people who are sneaky and manipulative from GE? Not good at all. Also, isn't not paying taxes illegal? How can corporations get away with that? Republicans says the rich shouldn't be overly taxed, but some do not even pay taxes! That is really sneaky.

Brittany, it's just an article on my own political views, and since it's about me, humor definitely plays a role in my response to an internet troll. I try not to rip anyone who takes the time to read my stuff. Corporations don't always pay taxes. Just look at the recent news about General Electric. http://money.msn.com/top-stocks/post.aspx?post=a0b9a8f0-4c1a-4387-b76f-dc71e05e90d0

David, I myself did not delete any of my comments. I would assume that someone from Yahoo! redacted my comments. Not a big deal to me. But I'm done playing crazy with you David. I look forward to your readership though!

@David, What they hell are you talking about? Focus dude, your all over the place. Half the crap you are spouting wasn't even mentioned in this article. Are you just pulling crap out of your ass to argue about?

@James Chocolate Chip Mint Ice Cream is an abomination. Clearly the fact that you enjoy it shows that you are a lazy unemployment check collecting homosexual, that is out to rape me. And your curtains are ugly.

    Fags are Gay.

I find it interesting that it is assumed that conservatives are upstanding economy saviors and liberals are box-living drags on society looking for handouts. Fox News much?

  • James Schlarmann3/30/2011

Oh, and before I forget, as much I am 1,000,000,000% in favor of marriage equality for EVERYONE. The subject of gay marriage was not mentioned in this particular article...so I'm thinking this is a pet issue for our dear deranged David.

Brittany, I'm a humor-driven person first and foremost. The cannoli stuff was just mean to indicate that a) I'm not taking myself too seriously b )I'm certainly not taking him or his comments seriously and that c) I indeed have no power over anyone.

  • Brittany3/30/2011

@James, I get that he is a bit obnoxious. There is no way to dispute that, but instead of cracking immature jokes, maybe you could put him in his place. You go to his level when you say things like get me my cannoli. That is just ridiculous. Oh, and yes, his homophobic remarks are just childish. How people still think like this in the year 2011 is sad. No, not just sad, depressing.

@Matt, It is morally wrong to take the God out of government? I do not follow that. I agree, TMZ is garbage and sadly influences a lot of people. However, why is it Liberals who is being pointed out as the low lives of celebrity sex tapes?

  • Matthew3/30/2011

@ Brittany - Being liberal is not diminishing morality, however when celebrities are given their fame because of sex tapes, and God must be stricken from the pledge to our flag, one must question where being liberal draws its line in moral fiber? Fox News may not be so "fair and balanced," but lies are spewed across every media source. I prefer NPR. Besides, Fox also airs Family Guy. C'mon, really? If you want to blame one source of media, might as well blame them all. TMZ has more widespread influence than your local Governor.
