Christmas is not just a holiday, it's an entire season of it's own. Christmas is a season for joy, for giving and sharing and doing... and it's also a season for going with a very tight budget. With so many holiday related events going on, isn't it a joy to find one that the whole family can enjoy that won't take anything out of your "gift fund?"

The Village of Skaneateles, in New York, really "knows how to get festive." Even the street lamps have a 'warm, old fashioned Christmas' feel to them, and the shops you can visit when strolling the streets offer a variety of selections to meet your various Christmas shopping needs. The best thing Skaneateles offers is something that draws tourists during the holiday season, and that's the Charles Dickens Christmas held very weekend. The best part, if you have a family... is the cost of enjoying this event. Nothing!

At the Charles Dickens Christmas, you can enjoy carriage rides (FREE) and sample roasted chestnuts (free). You can experience the realism of proffessional actors playing Charles Dickens characters who wander the streets, mingling with visitors (also FREE!). The cast also perform scenes from classic Charles Dickens stories at 12:30, 1:30, and 3:30.

Of course, what 'classic Christmas' holiday event wouldn't be complete without Christmas caroling, a lost tradition that your family can join in. Children will enjoy meeting with 'Father Christmas', listening to stories read by 'Mother Goose', sipping hot chocolate or apple cider and snacking on donuts (free, free... all FREE!) and I can not say this enough... this wonderful Christmas experience won't cost you a thing! If that doesn't spark up the holiday spirit, I don't know what will!

The Dickens Christmas in Skaneateles, NY is something to bring the family to while also being an event that you might enjoy alone while strolling the streets and stopping in all the shops. In fact, this just may be the perfect time to get some shopping done, as there are many shops along the way (and I'm sure they will all be offering the 'best deals' for this event.)

Whether you go just for the kids, to see scenes acted by Charles Dickens characters, for the free carriage ride or to try roasted chestnuts, you will enjoy yourself. If you go alone while you are doing some shopping, you can enjoy an 'event' that Walmart and the mall couldn't even try to compete with. (These businesses offer these free treats every year to thank their consumers.) If you leave your wallet at home and just take the family out to the Dickens Christmas in Skaneateles, NY, that will give warm memories to your family and that alone is worth going for.

The Charles Dickens Christmas is held in Skaneateles, NY begins the day after Thanksgiving, then is held every Saturday and Sunday (from noon to 4 pm) until Christmas Eve. The Dickens celebrations in Skaneateles are fantastic, but there are many other events that take place over the holidays. Check out www.skaneateleswiki.org for the event calendar.
