A Clipper Fan's Mid-Season Manifesto: Look Around... Not Much Has Changed!

Scott McGuire
Super-human All-Star Blake Griffin has taken the NBA by storm, enticing sellout crowds with his beast-like brand of above the rim basketball. Now that I've kissed the ring of the anointed "next coming"... here's the truth...The Clippers are only marginally better with Blake Griffin on the roster, and like it or not Blake Griffin alone cannot "fix" the broken Los Angeles Clippers.

Battling Low Expectations:
When expectations are low, it's easy to be impressed. Based on the coverage Blake Griffin and the Clippers have received over the past 3 months, one would think they were in a battle for a top seed in the NBA playoffs. Nope! Not even close. At 21-35, the Clipshow is more likely to enter the NBA draft lottery, than they are the post season. When we allow ourselves to become enamored with individual statistics and accolades we conveniently neglect the bigger reality. We isolate the individual when we can't celebrate the team. History has proven this a recipe for disaster (ask the Beatles and The Police). I'm here to tell the rest of Clipper Nation that dunks don't equal wins. If they did, the Clippers would boast the best record in the NBA.

The Bottom Line:
Unfortunately for Clipper fans, we find ourselves in our familiar defensive stance at the office water cooler trying to artistically explain how this year is different. Pontificating on how Blake Griffin has saved the day. How 44 points in a loss to the New York Knicks is somehow a bright spot, or something to cheer about. Yes, it's a good thing. Yes, it may be a sign of better things to come, but when your team has arguably the hardest working and most electrifying player in the sport and can't sniff the 8th seed in the playoffs, larger problems abound. I can guarantee the answers are not at the bottom of a Blake Griffin dunk, or in a string of impressive individual statistics. The road to repair for the Los Angeles Clippers will be long and painful. I, for one, hope to see it before I die!
