A Cold October Night - Halloween Poem

Beth VanHoose
Sitting home alone

Snuggled in my chair

With my cat and my book

On a cold October night

From out of nowhere

The wind began to blow

Rattling the windows

And then the lights went out

Stumbling in the darkness

Toward the kitchen,

For a flashlight or a candle

Tripping over the cat

A knock on the door

Who could that be?

Peering out the window

I let out a scream in fright

Standing at my door

A witch and vampire talked

Crouched on the floor I listened

As they plotted their wicked scheme

I strained to hear their whispers

But there was no sound

Another knock unnerved me

What did they want now?

Ghosts and goblins joined in

They were starting to get angry

Voices louder, shouting at me

Lady open up the door!

Gathering my strength

I had to face my fears

As I opened the door they turned

And shouted "Trick or Treat"

Just then the lights came back

I looked up and down the street

Ghosts, witches and princesses everywhere

Celebrating Halloween
