A College Degree Does Not Guarantee You Success

My Story on How I Used My Degree in Marketing Communications to Find a Career

Attending college after high school is becoming something that is a must do on the list to a good life. Studies have shown that those who do not go to college have a very difficult life. On the other hand, those who go to college are supposed to have it much easier. I would like to be the first person to be honest with you and tell you that a college degree does not guarantee you anything. Your future depends on how hard you work and a college degree helps you gain your direction. The following article is an in-depth look at where I graduated from, the degree I obtained, and how I am currently using it.

I chose to attend Western New England College in Springfield, MA. The school was quickly growing into a well respected institution of learning. I was very lucky to get into the school because their recruitment requirements are not as strict as they are now. The school taught me how to grow up through in class learning and out of class learning. I learned that I had a passion for Marketing and decided that I would chase it through obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing Communications.

There is another reason that I chose my field over my other areas of interest. Marketing would offer me more opportunities than a lot of the other fields my school offered me to learn in. I wanted to make sure I had job stability and a career in marketing would provide me with that. So I eventually graduated with my degree in October of 2006. I was ready to enter the real world through the advertised help of my college. They promised me that they would assist in me finding the right job and I planned to take advantage of it.

My school failed to come through in helping me obtain a job. The career advancement center had very few job listings, did not offer the promised career training, and left me out to dry. I had to use my own research knowledge to find job openings and to break into the marketing field. What I quickly learned is that the marketing industry is not an industry that is as easy to get into as advertised. It is very hard to get into it and no one seemed to be hiring entry level employees.

This is when I decided to reinvent myself. I was facing the cold reality that many of my college friends were facing. We were headed towards a recession and companies were not hiring as freely as they used to. You had to be creative in finding work and applying your education to that work. I decided to find several different job avenues to apply my marketing abilities. The first area was to create a resume that marketed my abilities and personality.

My resume came out quite impressive. It made my ordinary jobs seem extraordinary without lying in the process. The best policy is to always be truthful and I decided to be truthful while selling myself in the process. I quickly had employers from multiple industries calling me. It was hard to decide what direction to go. However, I quickly made the right decision to go into the technology industry. My reasoning behind this was that the technology industry would allow me to market their products through customer service, research, and team-work. These are three things that are important to marketing and I knew I could apply them to this industry.

Fast forward to now and I am still in the technology industry. I enjoy the line of work that I do but had to find my way here. Your degree might seem like it can only be involved in one industry but it can actually be used towards thousands of different jobs. My advice to you is to not get discouraged when you graduate but to be proactive and sell the skills that you know you have. You will end up finding something that you love in the process.

A college degree doesn't even seem to guarantee a job anymore, let alone success. I have a degree in eCommerce, which I decided on before becoming a writer. Thankfully, it still came in quite handy with my at-home career.
