The first question you have to ask yourself is why do you want to study abroad? You have to know what you want to study, list the objectives to reach your goal and also list any roadblocks that may prevent you from completing your studies.
Are there benefits to studying abroad rather than going to a university in your country? For example, you may get a fully paid scholarship to study in a different country. That is a major advantage since these will be saving money in the long run. Another benefit is there may be a better career option for you when you graduate.
The first question is where you want to go. While some students want to go to a country such as England, your tastes and interests may lead you to France. When you know what you want to study, you can see which universities in that area offer the subject. For example, if you want to study Spanish politics, it is better to study this in Spain and not France.
Will you be able to afford to study abroad? You not only have to consider the costs of tuition and room and board, you have to also look at travel expenses and the cost of living in the area where you are staying. Will it be able to fit in your budget? Unless if your parents are paying for your college and have scholarships, you may have to consider getting a job to help with the expenses while you are staying in the country. Are there jobs available or are you planning to study in a country that has a high unemployment rate?
Can you speak the language in the country where you want to study? While in most countries, people speak English and their native language, if may be beneficial if you learn to speak their language. It is also important to be aware of cultural and ethnic differences between your country and their country. If you only speak English, make sure the courses are offered in this language.
Is the university you are interested in studying at an accredited one? If you ware studying abroad for a semester, will your university accept the credits you earned while studying in a different country? Talk to your academic advisor before you apply. He can tell you if the credits are transferrable. It is best to look for a university that has a good reputation. Request a course description and make sure that you understand it.
Can you handle studying in a different country? This is not like studying in the United States where you are close to family and friends. When you get lonely, it is easy to find transportation to make a surprise visit or to make a phone call. However, when you are in a different country, thousands of miles away, this is not so easy to do. Also, it is expensive. If you are the type of person who gets homesick easily, studying abroad make not be the thing for you.
The final thing you have to look at is what your social life will be. Are you interested in the cultural life of the country where you want to study? Is the university located near a big city or is it in a small town? Do you have to travel to get to places in the country that may interest you? You have to take this into consideration when you are creating you college budget. If you are looking to meet people at different hangouts, you have to think about the language barriers. Even if English is the major language in the country, you should be familiar with the different dialects. For example, English in England and English in the United States are two totally different languages.
Studying abroad is not all about education. It is a way of life. It is also an opportunity to tour the different cities in the country, experience different cultures and meet new and interesting people. After looking at all the considerations, if you believe that studying abroad is the opportunity for you, go for it!
