A Comparison: Clover Valley Cheese Snack Crackers Vs. Sunshine Cheez-it Brand Crackers

Eclectic Muse
Do you like Sunshine Cheez-its? Are you frustrated with the price? I have a solution for you! Clover Valley Cheese Snack Crackers are comparable in taste, similar in texture, and seemingly hold up better in the box. The best thing about Clover Valley Cheese Snack Crackers is they cost about $1.00 less than Sunshine Cheez-it brand!

Do not get me wrong, I love Cheez-its. I like how they taste. I think they are a healthy snack alternative to potato chips. I like to serve them at parties. What I do not like about Sunshine Cheez-its is the cost.

Clover Valley Cheese Snack Crackers are a great substitution. I found the Clover Valley brand while shopping at the Dollar General. They cost $1.25, compared to Sunshine Cheez-it brand $2.50 price tag. Since I tried Clover Valley products in the past, and was never dissatisfied, I decided to give the cheese crackers a shot.

I have tried other generic cheese crackers but always returned to Cheez-it because most generics fell short in taste. They either tasted like cardboard or left a bad after taste in my mouth. I decided to buy Sunshine only when I had a coupon or they were on sale. The chances of sales occurring when I had a hankering for the cheesy delights were few and far between.

In comes Clover Valley. These Cheese Snack Crackers have a strikingly similar flavor to Sunshine Cheez-it. They are not as flaky as Cheez-its, which could be the reason they do not crumble in the box like Cheez-its do.

Clover Valley Cheese Snack Crackers are slightly firmer than the Sunshine Cheez-it brand. I would compare the firmness to Melba toast crackers. So, they are crunchy.

The Clover Valley brand does leave a slight after taste in your palate. However, this was not of cardboard like others. They really do taste cheesy and that's the taste you are left with.

Like Sunshine, Clover Valley Snack Crackers can be used in soups, as a side with a sandwich, as a quick snack, or even crumbled up as a crust on baked chicken, pork, or a casserole topping.

My Cracker Baked Chicken

4 Chicken whole leg quarters with skin
A baking dish, large enough to accommodate the chicken, sprayed with Non-stick Pam
2 Eggs
¼ Cup Milk
About 1 ½ cups Clover Valley Cheese Snack Crackers, crumbled and crushed

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Rinse and dry your leg quarters. Whisk your eggs and milk together to make an egg batter dip.

In a Ziploc bag crumble, crush, and smash the crackers. Keep them in the bag. Dip your chicken, piece by piece, in the egg batter and place it in the bag. Tightly close the bag and coat the quarters individually with cracker. Remove the coated chicken and place it in your sprayed baking dish.

The chicken should be baked at 350 until it is golden browned. A fork should insert effortlessly. The baking time is usually about 45 minutes.

The cracker baked chicken recipe is a quick and easy alternative to fried chicken. You can substitute your favorite saltine crackers if you wish. The chicken always comes out tender and juicy. This entree goes well with just about any side dish.

Nutritionally, Clover Valley stacks up pretty well to Sunshine. For a serving size of 27 crackers, you have 150 calories, 7g total fat, 5mg cholesterol, 250mg sodium, 18g carbohydrate, and 3g of protein. Sunshine Cheez-it brand has 160 calories, 8g total fat, 250mg sodium, 18g carbohydrate, and 4g of protein.

If you are looking to save money, but do not want to sacrifice taste, you should give Clover Valley Cheese Snack Crackers a try.

True, the reduced fat version leaves little to be desired. I have noticed the recipe and packaging has changed since I wrote this article a year ago. I mentioned the crackers do fall short of Cheez-It. However they are a far site better than Great Value, HCF, or any other generic I've tried. For snacking, in my opinion, even Cheez-It reduced fat lacks flavor...

I just tried a box of these tonight, the 'reduced fat' edition, and my tastebuds failed to detect any flavor whatsoever. If you washed Cheezits thoroughly in a sink with hot water for 10 minutes, then let them re-bake in the sun, dusted them with powdered concrete and boxed them up, you'd have something similar to Clover Valley's reduced fat Cheddar Cheese snack crackers.
