A Complete Season Failure: Washington Nationals Baseball Season

Bruce Bostwick
Before there were the Nationals, there was a team that originally was called the Montreal Expos. How this happened was due to relocation in the 2005 season. The Expos weren't memorable and the city of Montreal is not known as a baseball city. The team however has had not many memorable seasons. There seems to be a bit of a conspiracy about this team. In the 1994 season, the Expos actually were having a good season but due to the strike, there was no World Series. The only reason it may seem like a conspiracy is due to the fact that this team could have possibly and the key word being possibly have gotten a World Series ring. 1994 will be known to some fans in Montreal as the year that was cursed and to prevent them from getting a championship, something that had continued to haunt this team until they finally moved to Washington. This team has only one division title in its history and that being in 1981 but they failed to win the National League Title and therefore have never been to the World Series. Montreal was one of the two possible teams, the other being the Minnesota Twins to be contracted and basically forced out of operation. However since the Twins weren't axed due to legal reasons, they indirectly kept the Expos alive and for 2002, the team had some hope finishing 2nd place in their division. The next 2 seasons saw this franchise have two homes, one being in Montreal and the other being in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This team was competitive in 2003 but failed to take the Wild Card going just 3 games below .500 at the end of the season in the home stretch. After 2004, the team would relocate but there was a decision as to what would happen and where this would relocate to exactly. Before that would happen, there were problems with it with one opposition being the Baltimore Orioles. His issue was concerned with having his team suffer financially, not like they're doing really well anyways playing but that's another story for another time. Since the move, this team has not seen above last place and that tradition seems to continue.

2005 while not having a losing record they finished last with an 81-81 record making the NL East be the division without a team below .500, a rarity in professional sports. Just last season, this team continued to go on its freefall by doing even worse with a 71-91 record. At this very moment in the 2007 season, the Nationals have played miserable and continue to embark on that tradition of being dead last. How a team can continue to do so is probably either due to lack of caring of lack of chemistry. It is interesting to think about this team since they have struggled. The only way this team should try to worry about is how to not finish last this season and trying to improve. Instead of going down, why not go up. Seriously, it will reach a point perhaps if they continue to struggle like they're doing. If they can get the team to find that chemistry that they need, this team could do better next season. As far as the playoffs this season, they just better hope to win games instead of continuing the trend of being a joke in the league including the time in Montreal when they had a lot of terrible seasons. Maybe someone will make a movie based on the team like Major League. If that is the only way this team will ever get better, then so be it. Anything that will actually make this team look strong will do the trick.

If the fans of the team show up and support them, which could help as well. It is something that can help motivate a team to do well. Support the Nationals and it can help to some degree. It just depends on if the team is willing to accept it even further. 2007 is out of their reach this season; all they can do is hope for 2008. Good luck Nationals, you're going to need it next season.
