A Comprehensive Guide to Data Rack

Data rack is a common feature in most offices and various industrial fields. The fundamental type of data rack that graces most work places is made of a metal enclosure which houses electrical equipment. In some cases the server rack which usually holds only a server is referred to as the data rack. But the main difference between the data and server rack is that while the server rack is equipped to hold only servers, the data rack can house a wide variety of components from monitors to audiovisual aids.

There are different ranges of sizes of data rack available which depend on the manufacturer and usually are made to conform to the sizes of the components involved. The data rack can be modified to fit in both large and small sized parts. You have to know in advance the required specifications and the type of equipment that would go in the data rack before selecting the right one. Otherwise selection will be quite difficult.

Whatever be the size of the data rack, the purpose remains the same which is to form an industrial computer or aid in server installation. There are a number of bolt holes in the rack facilitating manual attachment and some racks come with rails where the components are housed for ease of maneuvering by the technicians.

When packed with components, the data rack is bound to get heated up like any other piece of equipment. To counter this it is important that certain cooling techniques are employed. Based on the total mass of the components to be used, it will be more favorable if an open rack that allows sufficient circulation of air inside is used. If you opt for a completely sealed data rack, then presence of air conditioning or liquid cooling systems is a must to keep the various parts functioning properly.

There are various other factors that influence the selection of data rack. The most vital things to take into account are the size, capacity and the security features of the data rack. The size as said before should be determined based on the components you are going to house in the rack and also any future addition of parts to the rack. When looking at the security point of view, there are fully open racks and closed ones too. The open ones offer very little safety to the components inside while the closed ones come with locks for safety purposes and are more preferred by military and government departments. Depending on your security requirements, you can choose the appropriate one.

Equipping your office or home with computing devices can be a very costly affair. Keeping this in mind, you have to spend some valuable time on the selection of the appropriate data rack so that your equipment are well housed and protected for effective and efficient functioning for a long time.
