Getting a child to eat fruits can be a challenge since they would prefer to eat a bag of chips or cookies. This fruit slush can add the much needed fruit group in your child's diet without your child putting up a fuss. Have your child help make this summer fun slush and they will be even more eager to eat it and pass it along to their own friends to eat.
I am always on the lookout for some kind of healthy treat that all my kids will agree on. Summer is approaching fast and the long hot days will soon be here: we all know that we have to be armed with tons of snacks and refreshing drinks. Be sure to increase the fluid level when the days are hot and the children's activity level grows high.
I have tested this cool treat on many children and I have not found a child that hasn't liked it. We also tried various flavors which gave the children a wide variety. My children also seem to always rush around at breakfast and they run out of time to eat. I whip a batch of this up while the kids are getting ready for school and on the way out to the bus I hand them a spill proof cup to drink on the way to school. This is a great way to get their calcium and vitamins and a great way for them to get something for breakfast.
The recipe is easy and rather inexpensive. In a blender mix the following ingredients:
-1 Cup of Milk (you can use low fat or skim milk)
-1 Teaspoon of Vanilla
- 1 6 Ounce of frozen orange juice
-3/4 Cup of sugar
-20 Ice cubes
Mix the ingredients until the mixture is a slushy consistency
Add a little whole fruit to ensure that your child is getting the appropriate amount of fruit in his or her diet.
Since orange juice isn't every kids favorite flavor look in the freezer section at your grocery store and pick out your kid's favorite flavor. We have tried several flavors in our home such as orange, orange/banana, grape, pineapple and apple. The favorite flavor in my house would be orange and grape coming in second.
