A New Counter Culture Group: The Scene Kids

What Are Scene Kids?

Gemma Argent
Most people have heard of the more popular counter culture groups out there, such as Punk, Goth, EMO, Skater and even the fading grunge, but what about Scene? Probably not too many people are familiar with the Scene Kids. To be Scene is to stand out from the Punk or Skater groups by having a particular set of 'rules' or trends to follow. Punks are mostly the kids you see with spiky hair or Mohawks, generally of different colors, chains hanging from their necks and probably multiple piercings. The Goth crowd dress mostly in black, with black nail polish, lipstick and eyeliner. The EMOs are the 'emotional' kids who think of themselves as depressed, hating life and seem to enjoy writing about death and dying. Skaters, as their name implies, wear board shorts, live for skateboarding and apparently like life.

Now, the Scene kids tend to listen to music that isn't favored by the masses and in fact, many people are probably not familiar with some of the bands they like. One of their trademarks is to wear band tee shirts promoting their favorite musical groups. One of the good things about the Scene kids is that they are very tolerant and accepting of all sorts of people, yet they remain sort of loners, sticking to their own 'kind'. As with most kids today, Scene kids have MySpace accounts and frequently update their profiles. Although they post photographs of themselves, they generally won't admit to being Scene. This is apparently one of their quirky behaviors.

They are similar in look to some of the other groups in that they also wear eyeliner, dress in a lot of black, especially the new straight legged or skinny jeans, and wear their hair long and straight, even adding in some extensions to make their hair longer. They also go for the 'cutesy' accessories like hair bows with skulls and crossbones, hair clips and jewelry in multiple colors, huge sunglasses and anything Hello Kitty. Some Scene kids purport to be vegetarian, which is interesting since the other groups don't claim any type of eating preference. One of the other differences is that Scene kids enjoy life. They don't crave death or suicide and actually seem to like being alive. They are not into drugs and are more into the music scene. They are the biggest 'moshers' at concerts. Like a lot of the other counter culture groups, Scene kids have piercings, preferring the ever popular 'snake bites' at either side of their lower lips. Ouch. Boys might have ear plugs or gauges at varying sizes, while girls are more likely to have their noses as well as their ears pierced. Overall, Scene kids are non-violent and relatively quiet about who they are. They are not one of the in-your-face groups.

I remember the days when being a scene kid was just about going to shows and practicing/video taping new dance moves in the basement, now it's more or less a fashion statement. Everything went to hell in the late 90's. Such a sad story
