I was first introduced to Brookville, Ohio a couple of years ago, when a two women at Eaton Ohio City Offices and West Alexandria Library were assisted me in finding my Mother's family hometown during my family research. They were friendly, patient, and understood my heartfelt need to find where Mama grew up and where my relatives are living now and where any are buried. These neighborly employees took the time to tell me what they knew of my Mother's family; that folks with the same last name lived in all three towns and what the names of the churches and cemeteries were, and how to get there. I was crying when I left their offices because I knew their kindness was just what I remembered of how my Mother's family treated folks in their businesses when I was young. What I was searching for mattered to them, they had pride in their home towns and neighbors and family. They all suggested that I visit certain folks in each of these towns and find out what I could about my ancestors and to "be careful and if you get lost call us we will help you figure it out". I will forever be grateful to these small towns for helping me locate people and all the information I had prayed for since Mama passed away. The following places are such a joy to me and my husband that we bought a house in Brookville, Ohio and have the comfort of having our very own hometown that is quiet, friendly, and exciting without all the hub bub from the big cities.
1. Visit small towns in your area, its a wonderful time for all as you explore. What a wonderful adventure.
2. Call your hometown historical societyor one in a small town, go see them and let them tell you the wonderful stories of how the town was developed. I visited Brookville Historical Society and the gentleman opened the door so kindly and ask me,"What family do you have interest in knowing about? I said, "My Mother's families, Stonecash, Greer, Hall, and Blankenship", and he said, "Oh Yes, I am familiar with them and you may still have descendants of your Mother and Grandparents living here or close to here." "Make yourself comfortable and I have lots of information to tell you." This glorious genius told me where my Mama and her family lived and owned their tailor business, and showed me articles about them in the Brookville Star local paper." I was breathless and felt like I had a hometown for the first time in my life".
