A Day at the Inn

While growing up in Fall River, MA, there was one thing everyone loved. That was being able to walk anywhere and find almost anything you needed. You could shop for food, clothing, buy a car, choose form three theaters; all within minutes of the other. People said hello and were sociable anywhere in the city.

After being away for a long time, mostly living in Florida, Karen and I came back and we were living in Fall River; she got a position as the manager at the Bayberry Inn. With that position Karen was given an apartment at the Inn. Since I was working 20.5 hours on the Cape, it only made sense that we stick together so I left that position and Fall River to come to the Bayberry Inn.

The day begins early, preparing for breakfast at 9am. Guests will wake up to the smell of fresh baked French bread and individually made Belgian Waffles or pancakes and sausage and on Saturday with sausage. Each day is different; the guests are always good for great conversation in that lovely, sunlight and spacious dining room. Karen has a knack to get anyone talking and often conversation will continue after breakfast.

Observing these conversations they seem occur in four sessions. The first is the initial entry, being welcomed to the inn and informed about the latest events and answering questions. Breakfast usually is a follow-up on their activities of the previous day; where they went to eat and what they did; White Horse Tavern, Bowen's Warf, and Brick Alley Pub are favorites. Many compliments are for breakfast but just as many are for the comfort of the beds and from the hot tubes in most rooms. Newport like Fall River has many attractions available within walking distance. Driving is seldom necessary.

Tea time is another session, much more relaxed in their early evening with tea and fresh baked cookies or cakes. I try to stay away from them, especially the cookies. It is REAL easy to indulge! Many will take their tea and sit on the wicker chairs on the porch and just relax. Some will come down in the morning with coffee or to smoke too.

Managing the Inn takes a lot of work and good time management but it can be very rewarding as a business experience but more importantly meeting fine people who come from all over the world and all parts of the country to stay here and share their life with us.
