A day trip to the North Carolina Zoo is great for family outings, school groups, or anyone who enjoys nature and being close to animals. The Zoo in Asheboro, North Carolina is spread over several hundred acres and home to thousands of animals, birds, reptiles and more. Arrive early and wear comfortable walking shoes, to begin your exploration. You can choose either of two entrances; North America or Africa. North America is home to the polar bear and Kid Zone. We usually choose to visit there last. Africa is our entrance of choice, because we enjoy starting out with the elephants, zebras, giraffes, ostriches and more.

Often times, you may be greeted by Canadian geese in the parking lot when you arrive. If you park in one area and wish to start in the other area, you can catch a shuttle bus or enter the Zoo and head to the nearest tram stop. The best part of the trip is the enormous variety of wildlife set in a beautifully landscaped environment. From A to Z, aardvark to zebras, you are sure to see an exciting array of animals and flora.

Safety measures are in place while at the same time, allowing you to get up close and personal with many of the animals there. Guides or zoo staff welcome questions and eagerly provide information about each exhibit. If you walk the entire zoo, you will be walking in excess of six miles, or you can intersperse those footsteps with the tram system that makes frequent stops. Cafes and restaurants are also available at locations throughout the zoo, with picnic areas located near the park exits.

We usually plan to finish up in the Kid Zone which is packed full of activities for your children. From climbing, sliding, and jumping to building a fort and finding your way through a maze, the Kid Zone is a great area to spend time. The giant tortoises and butterly gardens are always a favorite. Plan your fun packed days, load up your family, and head to the zoo.
