A Debt of Bones & a Skull Full O' Mush: A Review of Heavy Seas Mutiny Fleet Siren Noire by Clipper City Brewing Co.
Clipper City Brewing Company
Baltimore, Maryland
If the sirens of the chocolate midnight are calling from within this Imperial Stout then they are doing so via collect on a pay-per-minute phone with poor reception because this beer is good but it's not THAT good. For $6.99 per bomber it's rather ordinary actually with ribs protruding and a jawbone askance. My jaw, that is. As slack as it is it has a solid reputation for disseminating truth in veritable shards. Whereas truth is waved like an idiot flag in most hemispheres of the human brain this one is white with surrender. No jollies or rogers outside of the fog of being quite tipsy.
Now, some of you might be happy with the Guns N Roses artwork on the label and the 8.0% ABV soaking into your skull and making euphoria seem like a commonplace synapse, however, I am not so stricken as to put much stock into finery and facades. The beer is solid but it has its perforations and the wind whipping through each hole brings the rigging that much closer to a total breach and capsizing.
Listen, this is a Hershey bar soda in a Cadbury world of wine and fine cheeses. A tad on the flat side of non-perfection but instilled with enough alcohol to make your skeleton shimmy like the south side of Satan's bedchamber but not enough to make all flesh be gone and the spirit to rise and reverberate. I'll give ye a 3.5 out of 5, Skully, but no more shall my boney finger waggle in your direction to imbibe or gesticulate Heavenward with a single middle metacarpal bone let alone a humerus or a radius. Arggggh. Hop on de gangplank and start a-walkin' ye boney lass.
8.00% ABV
