Step #1. See and admit the problem.
If you see yourself constantly in debt, give yourself some time and analyze your spending patterns. Have you been spending on non-essentials? What are your wants? What are your needs? Have you been spending too much on mere wants, out of impulse? Do you have enough money to spend on these luxuries in the first place? After answering these questions honestly, and if a problem is seen then it must be time to remedy this problem.
Step #2. Budget.
List your expenses, your debts, add them up. List your income and add this up. Subtract income from debt and you will see if your financial outlook is good or bad. If it is good then good for you, you have been doing ok, but this does not mean that some improvements can be made. If the outlook is bad, with you spending more than earning, then take action and decide which of the expenses you have are necessary and which can be removed.
Step #3. Bid farewell to the credit card. Cut down on spending.
A credit card is a temptation to contract more debt. Without one you are forced to live within your means and reduce your spending.
Here are some additional ideas on reducing spending
- Never buy on impulse. Wait for sales. Compare and canvass item prices before buying anything. You don't have to buy on retail. Bargain and haggle before paying for anything.
- Car pool or take public transport. It's cheaper and can save you a lot of money.
- Eat at home, plan your meals. Freeze unfinished food, to save for later. Eating at home is usually healthier and cheaper, thus having dual benefits.
- Forget buying coffee, maybe take a nap instead, you'll be refreshed afterwards.
- Instead of watching a movie or buying books, rent and borrow books, dvds, magazines, all of which are free from your local library.
Step #4. You are unique, no comparison required.
You are a unique individual, and there is no need to keep up with the Jones'. You have to live within your means and need not compare yourself and your spending habits with others. You dictate your needs and wants, so controlling oneself and knowing oneself is the key.
Step #5. Pay your small debt in its entirety
There is a sense of accomplishment in getting rid of debt, no matter how miniscule it may seem. Pay one debt, and the others are more likely to get paid too.
Step #6. Have fun
There are many ways to enjoy without spending, or even just spending money wisely. Have fun with family or friends without necessarily paying much. See this change positively and do not treat debt payment as a burden. Keep some money for yourself, to spend at your luxury, just not too much. There are many things that make the world go round, not just money.
There is no one but you who can make debt free bliss a reality. Hopefully these suggestions take you a step closer to being debt free.
