A Deeper Understanding of Marriage

Marriage is a sacred relationship between two people. With commitment to each other the couple can make their life happier.

Marriage is the beginning of a new chapter in the life of a person. It is a sacred relationship where man and woman have committed to share their life with each other for the rest of their life. In fact a good married life leads to a good and peaceful family and leads to a healthy society. Marriage is the very fabric of a good and disciplined family and society. The respect the couple gives to each other, appreciating each other's views; and likes and dislikes forms the very edifice of a disciplined marital life. With the onset of modernity, the marital relationship has to be necessarily redefined.

Different types of relationships:

Marriage relationship could be monogamous or polygamous. Monogamous is having single marriage. Whereas in polygamous, man marries more than one woman. In Muslim custom, Polygamy is allowed, where a man can marry up to four wives. Polygamy is an accepted procedure in many countries including Africa. But most countries accept Monogamy as a socially accepted principle.

On the other hand bigamy is an offense in many parts of the world, including United States. If a married person without divorcing the wife marries another woman then it become 'bigamy'. As such, it is essential that before the person marries he gets a certificate that the earlier marriage is divorced. If this is not done it is an offense in most countries including United States.

There is another system of marriage viz., polyandry; where the woman has more than one husband. But this is not accepted in most of the countries across the globe.

Marriage between same sexes is called 'gay marriage'. Most of the countries except United States, Canada and few other countries, gay marriages are not recognized.

How to make the marriage sustain in this era of modernity?

Earlier, women were taking care of the family and men folks used to work. With modernity, women started working outside. These working women now have duel role to play. They work in the house as well as work outside. This change role of women has caused unsavory relationship between the couple and therefore married life has the threat of divorce. In the United States, nearly 50% of the marriages end up in divorce.

Even in this modernity, many marriages have proved to be successful. To make the marriage successful, both the couple should have serious commitment to each other. With full understanding of each other and with determination, marriage life will be a sure success.
