A Different Kind of Border

Kelly Dodge
Did you know that the word 'frotera' in Spanish translates to boarder? It's interesting, if only for the fact that in every other country, the word frontier means 'boarder'; every country except for America. In America frontier makes us automatically think of plains and hills and valleys; the big open spaces we have yet to divide up and conquer. Our country was built on the idea of Manifest Destiny.

We have really taken to that, haven't we now.

To come out and say that I do not appreciate this country would be arrogant, because in truth I do, I am in love with (almost) everything about this country. I love the culture, the (short) history, and most of all, the opportunity that I hold in the palm of my hands, to be educated and knowledgeable about anything I please. My frustration does not lie in the being of our country, nor in my sole situation but more so in my inability to open the eyes of others to the world outside of America.

I am tired of people going around forcing their beliefs about others. The beauty of the country I live in, the country most everyone reading this lives in, is that we hold certain truths self-evident. If you don't know them, I suggest you educate yourself before slipping through the cracks and slumming along with the rest of the masses. The beauty lies in our potential to rise above the smog of ignorance, and to learn - to learn about human nature, human history, and most of all the bonds that we as humans can form in long or short periods of time.

We are a product of our country. All of us as one have built this until our hands have bled and our backs have broken. If there is a flaw in the system, fine, fuck the system.

The solution (if we're really searching for one) is to step back, find a beat, and breathe. Perhaps if we stopped asking so many questions, it would become quiet enough to hear some answers. Today we are all so tired, beyond tired, brutally exhausted.

Why must we throw ourselves to the wolves daily and suffer through something that is, in all reality, a miracle.

We are so young, as a people.

All together no boarders, not frontiers, no 'froteras' to segregate us;

we are one earth, one union of souls;

who have only been engaged in heavy industry for two hundred years.

Maybe we've got some time left, maybe we're going away soon.

The fact is, the earth has been here for 4 billion years (and some change).

We are (together) just one more creation, flawed and beautiful in its own respect.

Call it the will of God, call it science, call whatever 'it' is whatever you want to.

Because you can; and you should.
