A Different Life

A Poem

Etienne J. Sarfelli
I have grown quite accustomed to the single life

to evenings spent alone

to solitude

to answering to no one

and taking care of myself

but it is nights like this

when the moon is high

and the night air is sultry

when I have the desire to roam the city streets

with someone on my arm

and watch the sunrise wrapped in the warmth of someone's love

when I have the need to be somewhere else

besides my normal surroundings

when I need to release the sudden burst of energy

that rises up in me

That seems so powerful

that I feel it will leave no other way

Nights when I'm more animated than usual

and I feel sorry for the world that cannot share in such excitement

I'm normally so subdued

but sometimes I just want to reach out and touch everyone

I've ever known, hoping to feel a connection

that satisfies the hunger I cannot control

The life I'm living has been the life

that I've grown used to

but sometimes I feel the need to find something different

to live a life that cannot be enjoyed alone.
