A Different Take on Snack Options with Zero Cholesterol

Lynda Braun
Cholesterol, cholesterol, cholesterol. We hear it so often that it is possible to become immune to the meaning of the word. What is cholesterol? Well, we have two kinds: (LDL) or bad cholesterol and (HDL) or good cholesterol. Now, I have high cholesterol which means the cholesterol, or waxy substance, is too great within my blood. When this substance builds up, it can clog the passages in the blood which can lead to a stroke, heart disease or even death. Based on the seriousness of this topic, I will take my readers on a different journey when thinking about snacks we can eat with little or no cholesterol. Instead, I will offer you choices that have been known to actually lower, your high cholesterol.

First, we will start with fruits. These are wonderful sources of snacks that have zero cholesterol.
But, what if we mix a few almonds with our fruit? Almonds can lower the bad cholesterol and provide your body with important vitamins and minerals. In addition, almonds are good for digestion. So, a small fruit salad, with a handful of almonds will not only satisfy your hunger, but will aid in lowering your cholesterol.

Next, there is a fruit called capsicum. It is very spicy and is used for making salsa and chili. The extract of this fruit stimulates blood flow which will help keep the blood from clogging. Try a little salsa with celery, broccoli, or carrots. It is really an interesting combination of foods and will aid in lowering your cholesterol. Give it a try.

Now, we should use garlic which has sulphur that lowers the cholesterol level that is bad (LDL), and raises the cholesterol level that is good (HDL). (Eat this when you are either alone, not going out, or sharing the snack with
others, due to the strong odor garlic gives off). Chop up some garlic cloves, then saute them very lightly on the stove with olive oil. Put the garlic on cholesterol free crackers, or better yet, tomato and cucumber slices. This is delicious and filled with great minerals. But best of all, you will be lowering your own cholesterol.

Berries and a little lemon juice make a wonderful snack. Remember, that berries are rich in antioxidants. Let's add some alfalfa sprouts which have been known to block the formation of blood clots, thus, lowering your cholesterol. This is a tasty snack and so very good for you.

If you are in the mood for a smoothie, then go for it. Try mixing ice, some low fat yogurt, and whatever fruit you wish. Blueberry, strawberry, and mango are three of my personal favorites. Add a little sweet and low if you want a sweeter taste. Put it into a blender. When it is of the consistency that you wish, pour it into a large clear glass. Put a mango on the rim of your glass, add a straw, and who would believe you are helping to lower your cholesterol with so many healthy fruits?

These are some amazing, healthy choices if you are truly serious in consuming zero cholesterol, or even more serious on lowering your cholesterol. Remember, exercise is extremely helpful and always ask a physician what exercise is best for you before you begin. If your physician suggests you take oral medication along with diet and exercise to lower your cholesterol, please listen. Stay healthy!!
