A Disturbing Walmart Christmas Commercial

Danielle Olivia Tefft
I fully understand that the television advertising world has little interest in marketing to my age group unless they are pandering pharmaceuticals. Walmart is no exception. Almost everything is geared toward upwardly mobile 20-somethings, if such a demographic still exists. I never really understood this strategy, since we baby-boomers supposedly have the most money-or used to before the economy tanked.

The Walmart commercial I saw last night was very disturbing. I'm not sure what demographic it was targeting. Wanna-be serial killers, perhaps? Have you seen this commercial? I'll try to sum it up from memory. Allow me to paraphrase, please:

There is a lovely lit Christmas tree. A concerned mommy peeks around the tree and asks, "Samuel, what are you doing?" You see a little boy in his pajamas peek out from behind the tree. He is holding a rather large toy gun. There is a pile of rope sticking out from underneath him. "I'm going to tie Santa to the Christmas tree," he replies resolutely. His mommy says, "Honey, you can't even tie your shoes yet!" Undeterred, the little sadist says, "Go to bed, Mom."

Yes, go to bed, young mother. Your turn will be sometime soon. When your troubled son perhaps decides to pour a flammable liquid on your bed while you sleep and throws a match on it. Want to bet this event also occurs before he learns to tie his shoes? The last thing you'll remember is that striking sound before you float off to the pearly gates.

Is this Walmart commercial supposed to be funny? I don't find it so. I think it was written by the same people who think cartoon figures and reptiles are acceptable representatives to sell anything from car insurance to medication. I'm not amused. At least the reptiles and cartoon figures aren't menacing, like this little boy is.

My friends and family know I am not a Walmart fan. In fact, I will purposely buy anything I need anywhere else but Wal-Mart, on principle. I don't care if I pay more. So they will say I don't like the commercial with the little devil because I hate Wal-Mart. Well, I would be disturbed by this commercial no matter what company was pandering it.

Just remember Santa could easily outsmart him, leave him lumps of coal in his stocking and be out of there before the little deviant could even blink. If I were Santa, I'd tie him to the Christmas tree. Can you imagine mommy's face in the morning? Now, that would be funny!

I'm going to put this disturbing Walmart commercial out of my mind, now that I have said my piece, so that I can have a Merry Christmas. I hope you will have one, too!

I think I saw that commercial and unless they redid it, you got it totally wrong. I loved it. I don't even remember seeing the gun and he was holding the rope not sitting on it. And the boy is suppose to BE 4 OR 5 YEARS OLD. THE BOY SAID, "I'm going to catch me Santa Clause." (the kid wants to catch him so he can obviously prove he is real like most kids think of setting up traps to catch Santa putting the presents under the tree.) THEN THE ANSWER TO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THAT ROPE is "I'm going to tie him up." Noting about tying him to the tree and again he is like 5 years old and wants to talk to Santa and maybe force him to give him a ride in his sleigh. And when the mother reminds him that he can't even tie his own shoes, he pauses with the thought and in a fustrated tone says "Go to bed, mom!" because he doesn't want her to point out what is wrong with his plan and have Santa catch them talking. HE IS A KID! You know a youn

Girl, I am SO glad I missed that one on the tube -- sounds DREADFUL! There are too many unfunny & downright creepy ads out there. Earlier tonight, my husband and I were disgusted with a stupid IKEA commercial (the one where the couple talks to their appliances like they're a sports team) because it was written and performed by people who have no clue what "funny" is!

I don't believe I saw this one at all, and I don't believe I missed anything. There must have been enough people complain that it got taken off the air--I hope. Great work! Johnny Yuma

I have to say this one tops the cake..It's the Joe's Crab Shack Commercial where the little kids are saying "Oh shit" but the "Shit" is beeped out..now that's WAY worse than the Walmart commercial. Both are still very amusing though..

Don't think I saw that commercial. I have to ask, what the hell is Walmart thinking? This is supposed to draw people into the store?

I don't understand commercials like that either, I saw one recently where a little girl is being very sacastic towards her mom about what her mom has placed on her plate for lunch, I think it is a commercial for fish sticks or something, but basically it is made so that the mom looks like she is afraid of the child, and the child is the boss, imo that is just a recipe for serious problems on many levels.
Sometimes I wonder if the people making the commercials even have kids or have been around unruly kids any length of time, meanness does not need to be encouraged at all.

I had to read it again, too. I feel so out of the loop when I read some commercials
