Lockdown and Evacuation of Johns Hopkins Hospital
The hospital has put some parts of the facility, such as parts of the Nelson Building, on lockdown and is evacuating other areas of the hospital. The e-mail sent to staff at the hospital said "shooter on Nelson 8," reports the Baltimore Sun.
The Nelson Building is a thoracic center. This center provides treatment for respiratory disorders and critical care issues.
The shooting occurred on the eighth floor in one of the buildings of Johns Hopkins hospital. The shooter has barricaded himself in a hospital room; he may have a relative in the room with him.
Multiple Shots Fired
There are reports that multiple shots were fired. A nurse on the scene said "I started running, when you hear gunshots you run," notes the Baltimore Sun.
The Baltimore Sun reports that the shooter had some concerns about the medical treatment his mother was receiving, according to a nurse on the scene. He had also made comments that he might jump out of a window.
Some roads around the hospital have been shut down. SWAT teams, police and fire fighters are at the hospital now. There are also police helicopters up in the air around the hospital.
Gun Violence in a Hospital is Tragic
It is tragic that a doctor was shot in a hospital, while doing his or her job to save lives. Will hospitals soon have to start screening visitors through a metal detector at the entrance of the hospital?
Let's hope the doctor wasn't severely injured and can continue on to a normal life and career. Becoming a doctor takes so much education, time and energy. And in the blink of an eye a bullet can take away all of that learning. Let's hope the gunshot wounds are not to the head and do not damage the intellectual capacity of the doctor.
