A Dog Day Poem

Canidae: Fox and Found

Amanda Farrell
The flesh of flowering tropical
yellow electric moist,
a birth of seasons dipped in all
intelligence and choice:
There is a tree of elegance
in a heart of true praise,
while time designs a sacred dance
for orange-apple days.

Crisp star's returned without pretense,
open mouth, moldy grains,
bloated famished sod;
a breathing muddy countenance
lies happy in the shade.
A dog's almost a god.

The idea of the "dog days" of summer evolved from astronomical observation of the star Sirius, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major, which appears to rise with the sun sometime in July or August, depending from where it is viewed.
