A clear example of the danger of boxing and damage to the brain is the case of the South Korean boxer Choi Yoi-sam, who suffered a stroke last December 25 after winning a bout in Seoul, was declared in a state of brain death, as reported by the agency Yonhap. The athlete, 33 years, ever since he was admitted in hospital Soonchunhyang in Seoul in a coma. According to the South Korean agency, was convened a commission composed of seven persons, including a neurologist, who agreed unanimously to declare boxer in a state of brain death. Choi was operated by the same urgency December 25 after falling unconscious victim of a stroke shortly after take victory of the judges unanimously against the Indonesian boxer Heri Amol, 24 years.
The incident opened a debate on the safety of boxers and the authorities of the sport shuffled the possibility of deferring a decision to lower the current eight-ounce gloves by six, in an attempt to increase the victories by KO. Choi's family has decided to donate his organs, according to South Korean media. Once admitted to the hospital, the medical team involved in his care said that the evolution of the athlete in the first three days would be crucial in determining the severity of the damage, but ultimately could not get out of coma. The boxer, a former fly weight champion of the World Boxing Council, planned to perform various fighting in the United States after the fatal battle in Seoul, unfortunately this will not be possible.
Is not the same to watch the fights on tv and receive the blows in the ring. This is an event that collects a lot of money and pays a lot of money but I think the brain is worth much more. Opinions on whether it is safe or not boxing are much divided. The truth is that people continue to die and then is like nothing happened. Sport is good for promoting alternatives to young people and keeps them away from drugs and other vices. But if people are dieing in a sport, it loses all its value and its purpose is not positive any more.
