9.2.4E.1: Demonstrate a basic understanding of the value of money.
9.2.4E.2: Identify various sources of money for personal spending.
Materials:
· Pumpkin Pie Recipe
· Grocery Store Advertisement
· Coupons
· Calculators
· Pencils
Introduction:
The class will begin to discuss their last Cook to Learn activity (ice cream making). They will discuss the steps taken to accomplish that activity. The students will then begin to discuss their new recipe, pumpkin pie. The students will look at the list they had compiled the day before regarding the ingredients necessary to follow the recipe and make the pies. The teacher will lead the students into discovering that they need to check the grocery store circular to see the cost of the ingredients. Also, she will lead them to determine that they should see if they have any coupons in their coupon envelopes that they can apply during their shopping trip.
Activity:
1. Students will work independently on this project. Although, this is an independent project student are encouraged to ask for peer assistance before asking for the assistance of a teacher.
2. Students will collect the materials necessary to complete the activity.
3. Students will begin to search the advertisement for the ingredients needed to complete the recipe.
4. Students will be record the price of the ingredients in the column labeled price.
5. Students will sort their coupon envelopes to see if they have any coupons that can be used. The amount of the discount will be recorded in the column labeled coupons.
6. Students will then use a calculator to find the price of the item after taking off the coupon discount.
7. Students will then use a calculator to find the total amount for all the ingredients needed to complete the recipe.
Assessment:The teacher will review each child's final list. She will check the child's ability to find the item in the circular as well as to locate and apply coupons. The teacher will also observe the students' ability to use a calculator in a real life situation.
