A Few of My Favorite TV Moms

Debi Rideout
There are many TV moms on television. Some are classic moms such as June Cleaver in Leave it to Beaver. Some seem more severe like Lois on Malcolm in the Middle. My favorite TV moms are the moms that tell it like it is with some heart. You can just tell that they really love their children, but they love them in a straight and honest way.

My most favorite mom on TV is Judy Miller from Still Standing. She is witty and bright. It is clear from watching the show that she really loves her kids. She reminds me of myself, and how I parent my kids. In my house, my kids are allowed to ask me anything, and they know they will always get a straight up answer. I do not sugar coat anything. It leaves a very good open line of communication. I am very honest about some of the mistakes I have made growing up, and I share those mistakes with them. I want them to learn that it is okay not to be perfect because no one truly is. Life is about learning and growing, and that is what I want for my kids to learn. Judy lets her kids be the unique individuals that they are, and that is what I strive for with my own children.

Roseanne on Roseanne is about the most real mom on TV. She is totally hardcore in her ways with her kids. She is not afraid to speak up, and put her kids in place. Although her methods are a little to drastic for my taste, I still admire that you know exactly where you are at with her. She never hides her emotions. Her kids never wonder what she is really thinking, and to me that is much better than those June Cleaver types of moms.

Jill Taylor from Home Improvement is a really good mom to me. She is a very nice mom. I like her because she shows herself as a mom that is always there for her family, but still is a mom who goes after her own goals. Maggie Malone Seaver from Growing Pains is also the same way. They have a life outside of their families. I think so many times women fall into the trap of being so concentrated on their family that they lose themselves. This is not the case with these women. Jill goes back to college to follow her dreams, and Maggie is a working mom.

In reality I would love to be like all of these moms. Hopefully, I am so far. I want my kids to know that I will always love them, and that I will always be there for them. I want us to always have an open honest line of communication. I want them to respect me for going after my own dreams in life. I want them to know that I support them in their own dreams too. I want them to know it is okay to make mistakes in their lives because from mistakes is how we learn to become a better person. I want them to know that they are the most precious gifts that I have ever been given, and that for me there is nothing more wonderful than being their mom.

This is a very sweet list of favorite TV moms. That Lois character is pretty frightening, but they sometimes showed flashbacks to early years. She and Hal were '80s yuppies and smart, successful and kind. Somewhere along the way their kids fixed that. LOL In an interview the actress, Jane Kaczmarek, made a weird expression when asked about working with all the kids on set.
