A Few Old Wives Tales, Myths and Superstitions I Followed

Just Pray

I once had a fertility specialist tell me that to get pregnant it takes an act of God. We had been trying to have a baby for years and I had so many conversations with God it was starting to sound like a begging kid in the checkout line. God, God, God, can I have it? Father God, Jesus, Joseph, Mary, can I have a baby now? Please, Please, can I? can I, can I Please.
Don't get me wrong, I am a firm believer in prayer and positive thinking but my faith had truly been tested after six years of prayer.

Stop Trying

You are trying too hard, just relax and don't think about it and it will happen. Dealing with infertility is very stressful, and watching everyone around you popping out babies like a Pez candy dispenser does not help. I had so many well intended family and friends tell me to just relax, take a vacation, take up a hobby, stop trying and I would get pregnant. If I had followed that tale then I would of ended up eighty years old, on my hundredth cruise to the Caribbean, after I sold all my hobby supplies on eBay!

LydiaPinkham

In the 1880s Lydia Pinkham mixed up her women's elixirs that advertised "There's a baby in every bottle!" I had never heard of Lydia Pinkham and her miracle cure until an old church lady told me about it. So I called up my local drug store to find out if they still carried it and sure enough in 1988 Lydia was still peddling her snake oil cure. So I bought it, took it religiously and all it gave me was a bad taste in my mouth.

Adoption

Adopt a baby and you will get pregnant. Now I actually know someone who did adopt a baby and got pregnant a few years later. Coincidence? Maybe, or maybe they had used the Stop Trying method not even knowing it and at that point had two wives tales working at the same time! We tried this one too, It felt like my prayers were being answered when a friend called me up one day and said there was a young unmarried girl wanting to give her unborn baby up for adoption. We got an attorney, everything was set and two weeks before she was to give birth she changed her mind.

Success

After the first jerk of a doctor so snidely told me "you know, pregnancy IS an act of God" I never thought I would find another doctor who I would put my trust in. So when a friend referred me to her doctor I was a bit skeptical but I went to see the good doctor. Less then six months later I was pregnant! Nine months later I gave birth to most beautiful baby girl in the entire world and that is a fact. Ten years later we went back to the fertility specialists once again and had our bouncing baby boy. We were a family of four now and life was perfect. One year after having our baby boy I missed my monthly visit from the tampon fairy and the ept was positive. Yes, God had answered my prayers we had conceived on our own. Another baby boy just 22 months after having our last one. I believe that all three of our children are miracles, two planned and one bonus.

I can't believe you found that "baby in every bottle" product still on the market! That's a hoot. Happy to hear that after all that you have two beautiful children. :)
