A Few Rainy Day Activities for Kids

If rainy weather has you down, never fear because there are plenty of rainy day activities for kids to enjoy while it's pouring outside. Parents shouldn't be afraid to get involved in the rainy day activities either; if it's raining outside it's a great opportunity to get involved with your children for a day!

Rainy Day Activities for Kids #1- Build a fort

Just for today, break out all the extra blankets and pillows and allow your children to get creative with building materials. Don't be afraid to push the furniture together either. Also, don't forget to get involved either! Jump right in and build a fort with them, or build one of your own. Don't forget to serve some extra tasty snacks. Smores or other treats served while camping are great snack ideas for spending time in forts.

Rainy Day Activities for Kids #2 Hide and Seek

After you build a few forts, start a game of indoor hide and seek. Be sure to set simple limits however as to what is off limits for hiding and what is fair game. Children need limits and it will help prevent sticky situations or lost children! If it's really raining outside, remind your children that rainy day activities happen inside only, especially if it is lightning outside!

Rainy Day Activities for Kids #3-Silly Sentence Play

This is a great activity for older children. Use a handful of index cards to write random, off the wall sentences on. Write one sentence on each index card and if you don't have index cards, use slips of paper! Place the cards on a table or on the floor in front of a room and vote on what scene you want act out such as a visit to the zoo, the first day of school, etc. The play begins and whenever a person feels like it, they bend over and pick up a piece of paper and read the sentence off the paper as their line in the play. This continues until the scene ends or there are no more slips of paper! You can write up new sentences for the next scene or use the leftovers. If you have older children that are good at improvisation this will be a great activity!

Rainy Day Activities for Kids #4-What is missing?

This is a great rainy day activity for younger children, but it can challenge everyone in the family! Have each family member gather one item from around the house. It can be a personal favorite item, or just a random object. Each object is placed in a pile on the floor. One person is it and uses a blanket to cover the pile of items and each child closes their eyes while one item is removed. Once the item is hidden the blanket is removed from the pile and everyone gets to guess what was removed. The child that guesses the right object can be it the next time to hide an item if you wish. You can increase the difficulty of this game by removing several items at a time; just make sure you have enough to make it hard to guess what is missing!

Rainy Day Activities for Kids #5-The Indoor Picnic

Just because it's cloudy and rainy outside doesn't mean you can't have a great picnic. This makes a great rainy day activity for the whole family. Spend some time before lunch talking about what you did that day as a family. When each child has a chance to talk about their favorite activity, talk about lunch and what you want to eat for a family picnic. Prepare your picnic as a family and put it in a picnic basket. Make sure you have a blanket and plates and give each child a job to do for the picnic, such as someone will set up the blanket, another will set up the picnic food, etc. Sit down and enjoy a great picnic with your family.

As you can see, just because it is raining outside does not mean it has to be a boring day. It's a great time to get the entire family together for some great fun.
